The saying goes, "There's no such thing as bad publicity." It would appear that Jason Aldean is benefitting from that sentiment - in a big way.
We're now about a week into the controversy over Aldean's song "Try That In A Small Town," and sales numbers for the single are starting to show the effect of the firestorm. While the single has been out since late May, the last week has seen an uptick in sales and streams for the track. A huge uptick.
According to Talk Of The Charts, "Jason Aldean's 'Try That In A Small Town' is already the fourth highest-selling song of 2023 in the US with only its sales over the past week." Billboard magazine reports that the song moved approximately 1,000 units per day during the period of July 14 – July 17. On July 18, the day that CMT announced plans to pull the music video from rotation, the song sold 12,000. By July 19, it surged to 108,000 in sales and the following day (July 20), the track moved 103,000. Yesterday, "Chart Data" revealed that the tune has sold over 500,000 units total.
That's sales. What about streams? On July 14, the song earned 204K official U.S. on-demand streams, followed by a slight decrease to 194K on July 15 and 174K on July 16. However, there was a significant rise in streams on July 17, with a 24.3% increase to 216K. The real surge occurred on July 18, with a remarkable 178% jump to 600K streams. The momentum continued to rise on July 19, when U.S. official on-demand streams of the song reached a staggering 3.2 million, marking an incredible 440.2% increase, according to a "Billboard" report.
Try THAT in a small town.
- In other Aldean-related news, country legend Lee Greenwood is full-on Team Jason, saying "I am a Jason Aldean fan. He is the biggest patriot, like a lot of us," Greenwood says. "It has nothing to do with racism. This is about people trying to take away the freedom of expression. It is a great song. I wish I had it."
- Also backing Aldean - rock legend and notorious conservative Ted Nugent, who says, "The idiots hate this Jason Aldean song because they hate when we push back against violence. They always get it 180 degrees wrong. This song is against violence. The song is about self-defense. The song is about protecting your loved ones in your neighborhood. If you find fault with a song that celebrates protecting your loved ones, your neighborhood, you might be going down to Target to the Satan display and get down on your knees. These are just weird people. We dismiss them because they've gotten out of hand because they've got no soul. I laugh in their face.'
