Ty Herndon covers Carrie Underwood’s “So Small” on his recently released record “Got It Covered,” and he recruited the Nashville-based LGBTQ youth group Rainbow Squad to appear in his video.
"You're about to meet 19 amazing kids and their families for an incredible song," he says in the clip. "I'm so happy to be able to bring this to you. We love you. You're important. You're awesome."
Ty tells “Rolling Stone” that the song is a “personal” one for him, because the first time he heard it he was just about ready to give up on music. “I had been back in Nashville for a little bit. I had moved back from L.A. and I had gotten sober,” he says. “I just wasn’t feeling it. I felt like I didn’t have a place. I was struggling.”
He notes, “I just didn’t feel like I had anything else to offer. It was a bad mindset. And I hear the song, it’s crazy what a song can do.” He adds, “God gave me the gift to sing and I heard in that moment, I can do that, and I want to do it with songs like that. Songs that change people’s lives and make a difference.” Check out the video to the right.
- As for how Carrie feels about Ty's cover, she tweeted, "When artists write & sing songs, we hope people will be able to relate to them...to find themselves in the lyrics," adding, "When another ARTIST relates so much that they want to sing it, too, it makes the song mean even more! I (heart) this.
