The Writer’s Guild of America strike is underway, and the effects are already being seen. Late-night talk shows including “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and “Late Night with Seth Myers” immediately pivoted to reruns starting last night, and will most likely continue to air only repeats until the strike is resolved. NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” officially canceled this week’s show that was going to be hosted by former cast member Pete Davidson, and reruns of “SNL” will air until further notice.

While most shows that deal with topical subjects are now on hiatus due to the strike, Fox News’ “Gutfeld!” is a notable exception. The show will continue as usual, and it’s being reported that host Greg Gutfeld and his team aren’t WGA members. Both writers and stars like Rob Lowe, Damon Lindelof, and more showed up on the picket lines in both Los Angeles yesterday in support of the strike, with Lowe commenting “We’re only as good as the writing we get.”

The WGA is striking after negotiations broke down with studios, networks, and streamers over working conditions, revenue, and how artificial intelligence will impact the jobs of writers moving forward. Times have changed for Hollywood since the most recent contract was negotiated; the last WGA strike was in 2007…the year Netflix began streaming and YouTube was just two years old.
