Country super group The Highwomen, a.k.a. Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby, stopped by “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” yesterday, where they performed their single “Redesigning Women,” and sat down for a chat with Ellen.

When asked who came up with the idea of starting the group, they all pointed to Amanda, who noted that she was inspired by her daughter. “She was showing signs of wanting to play music,” she said, “I thought the worst thing that could happen would be that she would go for country because there are currently only two women’s voices you can actually hear on the radio.”

Brandi then noted that after Amanda called her with the idea, “we started putting together this group of women,” adding, “we’d love to try and represent more women and girls voices in country music.”

Even Maren, who admits she’s one of the lucky women who gets played on country radio, says that compared to how much her male peers are played the difference is “staggering,” noting, “we’re just trying to change that.” Check out their performance to the right.
