Sturgill Simpson, when not fulfilling his role as one of country music's most highly regarded singer/songwriters, is also an actor. He appears in the HBO series "The Righteous Gemstones" as "Brother Marshall," a militia member/singer. In this past weekend's episode, Simpson - as the leader of "Brother Marshall & The Choir of Fire," took a swing at the Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers' 1979 country classic, "All The Gold In California."
While the original by Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers is a classic, it's rather slickly produced, as most songs in 1979 were. Sturgill stripped it down to a rootsy, acapella track that is a straight-up southern gospel rave-up.
