Singer-Songwriter Nanci Griffith Dies

GRAMMY-wining songwriter Nanci Griffith, best known for such songs as “Love at the Five and Dime” and “Outbound Plane,” passed away Friday at the age of 68. No cause of death was revealed.

Griffith released her debut album “There’s A Light Beyond These Woods” in 1978, and went on to release such singles as “Lone Star State of Mind,” “Trouble in the Fields,” “Cold Hearts/Closed Minds,” and “I Knew Love.”

Many of her songs found success after they were recorded by other artists like “Love at the Five and Dime,” which became a number three hit for Kathy Mattea in 1986 and “Outbound Plane,” which was a Top 10 hit for Suzy Bogguss in 1991. Other artists recorded Griffith's songs include Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Maura O’Connell. 

Griffith won the 1994 GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Folk Album for “Other Voices, Other Rooms, and in 2008 was awarded the Americana Trailblazer Award by the Americana Music Association.
