Shenandoah and Charlie Daniels have teamed up for a new song paying tribute to legendary rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The track, “Freebird in the Wind,” is inspired by the day in 1977 when the band’s plane crashed into a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi, killing Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray.
Shenendoah’s Marty Raybon says Charlie’s relationship with Van Zant made him a perfect addition to the song. Marty notes, “With the connection he has to the history behind the song, we felt he would be perfect to have on this record, and we were honored when he said yes.”
