Paul Cotton, singer and guitarist of the 70s country-rock band Poco, “passed away unexpectedly, peacefully” Monday, according to a post on his Facebook page. He was 78.  Cotton replaced Poco co-founder Jim Messina in the band in 1970, and upon hearing the news Messina called him a “special musical kindred brother.”

“We spent time together before he joined Poco and indeed gave me a great honor when he filled my position,” he wrote. The sound of his voice is now forever imprinted in my mind and in my heart. May he, this very kindhearted soul, rest in peace.”

Cotton first appeared on Poco’s third album, 1971’s “From The Inside,” and wrote many of their songs, including their Top 20 hit “Heart of the Night.”
