Just like everything else in life, the beauty industry has changed over the last year. And because we’ve all been busy with things like the pandemic, politics and what’s going on with Bennifer 2.0, some of us may have missed the updates. So here’s a list of the products and practices being ditched in 2021 and what we’re supposed to do instead.

  • Heavy foundation is out, tinted moisturizer is in - Say goodbye to powdery, full-coverage because these days people want natural, minimal and no-makeup looks. So BB creams, CC creams, and tinted moisturizers are the new go-to, even if they show every pore and pimple, it’s all about embracing real skin texture.
  • Reusable cleansing pads over facial wipes - Many of us have been using facial wipes for quick and easy makeup removal, but they’re bad for the environment. Now people are swapping them for washable, reusable cleansing pads and micellar water to clean their faces.
  • Lip oils and stains not lipstick - Some diehard lipstick fans might not like this, but if you’re not one of them, lip balms, lip oils and tinted stains have probably already made their way to your makeup bag. If you like hydration with subtle color, you might be a convert, too.
  • Texture-loving products instead of heat tools - Maybe lockdown is to blame, but natural hair is having a moment and it’s all about letting your individual texture shine through. The days of burning your hair with heat tools are over for those embracing their natural curls and waves.
  • Well-placed blush beats heavy contouring - If you never mastered that dramatic level of contouring and still looked like a potato, no matter how many tutorials you watched, you’ll be glad to know that look is out and a softer look is taking over. Cream blushes that warm the face with a natural, healthy glow are very 2021 and we’re not sorry to see heavy contouring go.
  • Eyebrow gels and soaps over brow powders - After all the brow lamination and feathering, things are now more low-maintenance on the eyebrow front. That means people are working with what they’ve already got, playing with natural shapes and colors and using clear gels and soap to hold their fluffy, brushed-up brows in place.
