There’s beating a record, and there’s diabolically demolishing one. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” did the latter, with an estimated $125.1M over the July 4th weekend. The previous record box office take for a movie over the Fourth weekend was “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” which scored $115.9M over four days in 2011.

It wasn’t just the Minions that raked it in over the weekend, a fact that analysts say is a sign that things are getting closer to normal for theaters. “Top Gun: Maverick” held tight at number two with $25.8M with “Elvis” falling to number three with $17.9M.
