This has certainly been the summer of Lil Nas X, thanks to his record-breaking hit “Old Town Road,” and now he’s landed a new milestone – the cover of “Time” magazine.

“There aren’t many black stars in country music; there aren’t many queer stars in hip-hop. There aren’t many queer black stars in American culture, point-blank,” the mag writes. “The fact that Lil Nas has risen so far and so fast testifies not only to his skill, but also to the erosion of the systems that for generations kept artists like him on the sidelines.”

In the article, Lil Nas X opens up about his decision to come out, admitting he was worried he may lose fans if he did, noting, “I know the people who listen to this the most, and they’re not accepting of homosexuality.” He adds that seeing people celebrate Pride month inspired his coming out. “I never would have done that if I wasn’t in a way pushed by the universe,” he shares, adding, “In June, I’m seeing Pride flags everywhere and seeing couples holding hands–little stuff like that.”

And while he has now achieved great success, Lil Nas X admits he still isn’t 100% comfortable with it. “It gets overwhelming,” he says. “I just shut down on everybody–I’m still a loner in a lot of ways.”
