Ken Burns’ next documentary subject is going to be country music, and now fans finally know when they’ll see it. “Country Music,” a 16-and-a-half-hour documentary, will air on PBS across eight nights between September 15th to 25th. While that may seem like a lot of hours, producers say they had to cut the film off at the mid-1990s, just after the rise of Garth Brooks.

Artists taking part in the documentary include Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill, Reba McEntire, Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, Brenda Lee, Naomi and Wynonna Judd, and Marty Stuart, as well as Dierks Bentley, Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor and Rhiannon Giddens, even though they are too young to have their decade of music covered in the doc.

Of the younger artists, writer/producer Dayton Duncan, notes, “We made it clear to some of the people who appear in our film as commentators…that they’re too damn young for us to cover their career. But they were gracious to tell us about the other generations that precede them and their influences.”

  • ONE MORE THING! To celebrate the upcoming doc, a special concert will take place at the Ryman Auditorium on March 27th. “Country Music: Live at the Ryman, a Concert Celebrating the Film by Ken Burns” will feature artists like Dierks, Rihannon, Roseanne, Vince, Ricky, Marty, Dwight and Asleep at the Wheel, playing vintage songs and more. That concert will air on PBS in conjunction with the special. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 am.
