Kelsea Ballerini is opening up about struggles with an eating disorder, something she addresses in the poem "Kanagroo," from her new poetry book “Feel Your Way Through.”
"My parents had just gotten divorced, and I think for me, it was a source of control," she tells “People,” admitting that until she got help at 18, she battled bulimia, took diet pills and worked out a lot.
“It's a journey, and it's never-ending,” she says, noting that now she’s “in a much healthier spot,” and shares, “I’m much more gentle with how I talk to myself and my body.” She adds, "There are still days where I revert back to being that 12-year-old, and I have to catch myself, and hold myself accountable to the work I've done."
And Kelsea says by being open about her own struggles she hopes it helps others. “When you're able to talk about things, you either are going to feel shame about it and you're going to keep it hidden,” she says, “or you're going to air it out and be vulnerable and connect with people and take the sting away from it and heal together.”
