Kane Brown is being sued by a producer who claims the singer reneged on their deal. Producer Polow da Don, whose real name is Jamal Jones, is suing Kane for breach of contract, claiming he cut him out of his eventual record deal with RCA Nashville.
Jones claims he “discovered” Kane in 2015 and offered to produce new music for him. He says Kane signed an exclusive agreement via Jones’ Zone 4 label, which covered royalties, advances and more, and they recorded three songs together, including the eventual hit, "Used to Love You Sober," which brought some interest from labels.
Jones says he was in contact with Epic Records, which is a division of Sony, but nothing came of it, but eventually Kane’s team started talking directly with Sony, leaving Jones out completely. He says that’s when Kane stopped communicating with him, and his attorneys told him Kane’s agreement had been terminated.
Kane eventually signed with RCA Nashville, and with UMG for publishing, but now Jones is claiming under his deal he’s owed not only royalties but a percentage of the deal. He also says Kane’s team threatened him with criminal action, accusing him of harassment, when he requested accounting information about Kane’s deal.
Jones is now seeking unspecified compensatory damages and more.
