Fans may not remember this, but back in 1999, Garth Brooks released the critically panned pop album “In the Life of Chris Gaines,” in which he played a fictional hard rock star from Australia who even had his own fake “VH1 Behind the Music” special.
In recent years the album has gotten a bit of respect, with Childish Gambino even covering one of the tunes “Lost in You,” but it seems it’s still a time in his career Garth would rather forget.
When a reporter from Yahoo Entertainment told Garth that she was a fan of the record, the singer responded, “That's very sweet of you to say,” adding, “A lot of people misunderstood it, and my ribs are still sore from getting the s*** kicked out of me for it. So, thank you for that.”
As for whether he’s ever revisit the Gaines character, Garth noted, “no, I would never even really get close to it again, because it really was a really tough time for me, because of the fact that I saw for the first time that people can be focused on something way past the music.” He added, “And that's never a good thing, when music takes a backseat.”
