Pioneering bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice passed away Christmas day at the age of 69.

“It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to one of the most iconic voices and musicians in bluegrass,” the International Bluegrass Association shared. “David Anthony ‘Tony’ Rice passed away yesterday, Dec. 25, at his home in Reidsville, NC. Few will ever match his skill and influence.”

Tony was best known for his skills as a flatpicker. Rice was a member of the David Grisman Quintet in 1975, and released several solo albums in the 1970s. He performed with Ricky Skaggs in the group the New South in the 1970s and also collaborated with him in the 80s. Rice teamed with Grisman and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia in 1993 for what became known as the “Pizza Tapes,” a bootleg that was officially released in 2000.

Tony made his last public performance in 2013 during his induction to the International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame.
