Billy Ray Cyrus may have had a pop hit with his Lil Nas X collaboration “Old Town Road,” but when it comes to his country tunes he can’t get a break. The singer recently released the song “Chevys and Fords,” which is barely getting radio airplay and when asked for a reason he was shocked by the response.

“It was awfully quiet. Nobody wanted to talk. Finally somebody spoke up, and I said, ‘How many adds did we have?'” Billy Ray tells “Rolling Stone,” noting at the time it was zero. When asked why, program directors weren’t playing the song, he says he was told it was “too country for the format right now.”

“I had to hit myself in the head and go, ‘What the f**k did I just hear?’ This truly was my WTF moment,” Billy Ray shares. “I said, ‘Do they realize what they’re saying and who they’re saying it about?’ … Yes, I am Billy Ray Cyrus from Flatwoods, Kentucky, and I love country music and a great country song. ‘Chevys and Fords’ had both elements that I love.”

In response, Billy Ray says he's written a new song, aptly titled “Too Country,” noting, “By God, if they think ‘Chevys and Fords’ is too country, wait until they hear this.”
