For the past year or so, a lot of people have been more focused on spending time outdoors, and that has resulted in people gaining what could be considered a false sense of confidence in their survival skills.
A new survey finds
- 63% of Americans say the last year has given them a “newfound appreciation” for the great outdoors.
- In fact, the average American now believes they would be able to survive 16 days alone in the wilderness.
- But whether that’s true is debatable, considering many Americans lack basic survival skills.
- For example:
- Only 17% of folks are “very confident” they could start a fire with a flint.
- And only 14% felt equally confident they could identify edible plants or berries.
- While 52% insisted they could identify different plans and trees, that didn’t really prove to be true.
- When shown a photo, only 26% could identify a black oak leaf.
- What’s more, only 35% could correctly identify poison ivy.
- And only 42% could correctly identify stinging nettles.
