Songwriter Jim Weatherly Dies

Songwriter Jim Weatherly, who wrote such classic songs as Gladys Knight and the Pips’ “Midnight Train to Georgia,” and “(You’re The) Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me,” passed away Wednesday at the age of 77. 

A member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Weatherly also wrote such tunes as “Neither One of Us,” “Where Peaceful Waters Flow,” and “Love Finds Its Own Way.” 

Several country stars, including Ray Price and Bob Luhman recorded many of Jim’s hits. Price had a number one hit in 1973 with “Best Thing That Ever Happened,” while Luman had a Top 10 single with “Neither One of Us,” and also recorded “Just Enough to Make Me Stay.” Weatherly also recorded songs on his own, including “The Need to Be” which went to number 11 on the pop chart in 1974, and “I’ll Still Love You,” which went to nine on the country chart.

Other artists who’ve recorded Weatherly’s songs include Dionne Warwick, Vince Gill, Tanya Tucker, Mac Davis, Marie Osmond, Neil Diamond, The Temptations, Trisha Yearwood, The Oak Ridge Boys, Hall & Oates, and more.
