Brett Young has always written songs about his relationship with now wife Taylor, but in the beginning of his career they weren’t always happy tunes.
While Brett and Taylor met in Thanksgiving of 2008, he says they “broke up a handful of times,” including when he moved to Nashville, so his self-titled debut included breakup songs like “Mercy” and “Like I Loved You,” even though they were already back together by the time the album came out.
Brett notes, “it turns out she’s hearing those songs on the radio and going like, this is the weirdest thing ever.” He adds it was the “hardest thing” for her to hear those “sad songs” when they were back together, but things aren’t that confusing anymore.
He shares, “it’s pretty easy now. In a happy love story I don’t really have to explain the music anymore.”
