Virginia ninth-grader Heman Bekele has been awarded "America's Top Young Scientist" for inventing an affordable soap capable of treating skin cancer.
Competing against nine other finalists in a competition by 3M Corporation and Discovery Education, the 14-year-old developed a soap that can combat melanoma, a common and deadly skin cancer, at a cost of just 50-cents.
In addition to the recognition, Heman won a $25-thousand cash prize, and he now plans to refine his soap and establish a non-profit to distribute it.
