Old School Fashion “Rules” You Don’t Have To Follow Anymore

Fashion is a form of creative self-expression, but it also used to includea lot of rules and it turns out, most of them no longer apply. While someof us stuck to the rules to know what to wear, cool and trendy typesabandoned them long ago and it’s time the rest of us do, too.
These are old-school fashion rules we can now ignore:

  • Denim-on-denim is a no-no - Sometimes called the “Canadian Tuxedo,” the denim-on-denim look was once considered low-class and a definite fashion “don’t,” but these days, you can wear as much denim as you like, just try to mix up the shades a little so you don’t look actually look like you’re wearing a denim suit of some sort.
  • Your shoes should match your belt - Once the standard for office attire, now you can play around with color in your belt, shoes, socks and any other accessory you wear.
  • Don’t wear white after Labor Day - These days literally no one cares about this old-fashioned rule, so wear white any time of the year you feel like.
  • No socks with sandals - It’s all about comfort in today’s world and if wearing socks with your sandals makes you happy and maximizes your comfort, then do it.
  • Don’t mix prints - Mixing prints, like stripes and polka dots, has long been a giant NOPE in the fashion world, but the times they are a changin. More and more designers are combining prints and you can too, if you’re feeling bold.
  • Hide your ink - Once upon a time, people with tattoos were expected to hide them when dressed formally for work or special occasions, but those days are long gone. Some company cultures may still look down on tattoos, but fashions that show them off are more popular than ever.
  • Sweats are sloppy - No longer just something you wear to the gym or to hang out on the couch, sweats can now be a stylish way to stay comfy in many different scenarios. They’re probably still a no-no at the office, but if you can get away with wearing sweatpants at your job, more power to you.
